How to Hang Your Vessel Using a French Cleat

Your Gretchen Weller Howard vessel comes ready to hang with a French cleat already attached to the back. Follow these steps to safely and securely mount it on your wall:

What You'll Need:

  • Stud finder

  • Level

  • Pencil

  • Painter’s tape (to avoid marking directly on the wall)

  • Drill

  • Driver

  • Screws (included, or appropriate for wall type)

  • Wall anchors (if not drilling into a stud)

Instructions:

  1. Choose the Location + Studs
Decide where you'd like to hang your vessel. Hold the vessel up to the wall and use painter’s tape to mark the top edge—this avoids marking the wall directly. Use a stud finder to locate studs in the wall. Mark their positions with pencil.

  2. Position the Wall Cleat
Take the wall-side cleat (the piece with the angled edge facing up and away from the wall) and hold it level against the wall, with the beveled edge at the top.
Align the top of the cleat so it's a few inches below your tape marker above (depending on the cleat’s position on the back of the vessel - the top of the wall cleat should be mounted about 5” below the tape marker).

  3. Mark and Drill Pilot Holes
Mark the screw holes through the cleat. Drill pilot holes at these marks—into studs if available, or use wall anchors if not.

  4. Attach the Wall Cleat
With a driver, screw the cleat firmly to the wall using appropriate screws (into studs) or drywall anchors.

  5. Hang the Vessel
Lift the vessel and lower it onto the wall-mounted cleat. The angled edges will interlock, securely holding the vessel in place.

  6. Adjust as Needed
Once hung, you can adjust the vessel several inches by sliding it on the cleat left or right.
