BURNT CANOE STUDIO

4820 BANKS ST

The studio spaces at Burnt Canoe provide a private workspace for artists and creatives, small businesses, remote workers, hobbyists and more. Our studios are a place to allow yourself to flourish creatively, to have a dedicated space to focus on work and to network with other professionals. Burnt Canoe Studio is a community of makers, thinkers, dreamers, and doers.

Burnt Canoe Banks Street is our original Mid-City location, home to artists, makers, and small creative businesses working from private studios throughout a historic New Orleans building. The studios have plenty of natural light and retain the character of the building, while the spaces around them provide the practical infrastructure that makes it easier to come in and get to work.

Studio rent includes utilities, high-speed fiber internet, heating and air conditioning, and secure 24/7 coded access. Members also have access to shared work sinks, a communal kitchen, indoor common areas, restrooms with a shower, laundry facilities, and an outdoor courtyard with seating.

Banks Street sits on a quiet, dead-end section of the street, with ample street parking, a driveway for loading and unloading, and building security. Studios are designed to be flexible working spaces, and we can discuss build-to-suit options when a tenant has specific needs.

Members also receive discounted custom framing, laser cutting, and engraving services through our in-house wood shop.

Additional Info:

Burnt Canoe Studio is centrally located in Mid-City just off either the North Carrollton Avenue exit or the Metairie Rd/Canal St exit on I-10. It is within a short distance of both streetcar and bus lines, a number of restaurants and bars, grocery stores, convenience stores, City Park, and Bayou St. John.

WOODWORKING AND DESIGN

Burnt Canoe Wood Shop specializes in custom woodworking and design, crafting heirloom furniture alongside unique projects in wood, acrylic, and metal. In addition to furniture, we offer custom framing, laser engraving, and laser cutting services. Every piece is made with care, using the highest quality materials to create inspired work that is built to last.

WHY BURNT CANOE?

The name Burnt Canoe comes from an actual dugout canoe, found charred and weathered in the Louisiana swamps by our co-founder Otway’s grandfather in the 1950s. He brought the canoe’s two halves back to the family cabin, where they’ve stood ever since, a quiet testament to resilience and history.

That cabin became a sanctuary for Otway and Hannah, a place where stories were told, imagination thrived, and possibilities were endless. It was there that their shared dream began to take shape.

But the symbolism of the Burnt Canoe reaches deeper. Throughout history, figures like Julius Caesar and Sun Tzu ordered their troops to “burn the boats” upon landing on enemy shores, eliminating any option for retreat. This act forced them to move forward with unwavering commitment.

This philosophy resonates with us. At Burnt Canoe Studio, we’ve chosen to pursue our dream with everything we have. We’ve burned our canoe, and there is only one path - forward. With The Studios at Burnt Canoe, we aim to create a space where others can do the same: to take the leap, to trust their voice, and to build something bold. Onward.
